This year, the Oak Bay staff grew over 27 varieties of Baker Creek heirloom tomatoes. If you’re not familiar with this company, check out their website. Their selection is amazing.
What a fabulous summer for tomatoes! Here are our favourites:
- Paul Robeson (Baker Creek)
We recommended this tomato last year after Elizabeth grew some from a package given to her by Baker Creek Seeds. At first, she was skeptical of what she thought was an “over-the-top” description of how great these tomatoes were – something about having a “cult-like following”. After growing them, Elizabeth said she’d “had drank the Koolaid” and was now herself a cult-like follower! Everyone else agreed. Smokey, tangy, dark and full of flavour.
- Pink Berkley Tie Dye (Baker Creek developed by Brad Gates of Wild Boar Farms)
We couldn’t resist the name, and now we’ve grown the fruit, we’re in love! Compact plants produce beautiful 8-12 ounce fruit with a very sweet, rich, dark tomato flavor.
- Frosted Green Doctors (Baker Creek)
A very productive, large cherry tomato that is fully ripe and very sweet when fully ripe. Perfect sliced in half on top of pasta with butter, Parmesan cheese, basil and chopped arugula.
